Why does second gear grind

I had no idea that this wasn't a good idea in the M3. I'm having the same trouble, could you please clarify your explanation. Its worth noting that even if you had no syncromesh left at all you should still be able to shift without grinding the gear teeth Originally Posted by GVFlyer. First Lieutenant. I never try to force the shifter into gear. With the OEM fluid, sometimes it would feel like 2nd gear is blocked when shifting at redline. With Royal Purple, I can now at least feel confident that the shifter will go into 2nd gear each time.

It still goes into with a lot of resistance though. It definitely ain't no S! Here is what I did: 1. Complain to dealership if under warranty of said problem, they will schedule a test drive with foreman 2. Foreman will drive your car with you inside and assess if said grind occurs as well as assessing if gears are hard to engage 3.

If step 2 is validated, you get a new transmission That's what happened to me. Originally Posted by italyix. Although these cars aren't the smoothest at high RPM shifting specifically the shift if it's happening more often it's probaly the syncros.

Sitting between the desired gear and synchronizer is a blocker ring. The blocker ring slows or "matches" the shaft speeds, allowing the synchronizer to execute a smooth gear change. The blocker ring is made from brass and will naturally wear out over time, exasperated by sloppy shifting techniques. However, there are numerous reasons why it could be happening. In most cases, it signifies that there may be internal damage to one or more components that you will want to get replaced.

The most likely culprit is the clutch system. Though automatic and CVT transmissions have their own clutch system that works automatically see reason 2 below , manual transmissions rely on the driver to press the clutch pedal when shifting.

An automatic transmission uses a torque converter and planetary gear system to automatically do the shifting for you as you accelerate or decelerate the vehicle. You may be low on transmission fluid or the fluid itself could be old and corroded. Between the gears themselves and the various sensitive components that control shifting between them, there is always a chance that something can become damaged.

This may lead to grinding gear noises or other shifting issues. Appreciate 0. Off the bat, it sounds like worn synchros which would mean a rebuild of your transmission or a replacement of it with another unit. Has it ever popped out of gear before? Most likely your clutch is worn to the point where you need just a tad more travel so that the gears don't grind. You really only need a "clutch" for 1st and 2nd gears - all the rest you can pretty much shift without the use of a clutch.

The problem is your clutch pedal needs to be fully depressed in order to not get that grinding action. Get Inline 0. Originally Posted by tock Originally Posted by Dackelone. Can you shift into 2nd at lower speeds or lower revs, or does the grinding occur every time? If it happens only in 2nd gear and almost all the time, then it is likely a cracked or worn synchro ring. Unfortunately the trans would have to be taken apart to confirm this and to fix it. So it's getting a fresh unit straight from a BMW warehouse nearby and should be all wrapped up by the end of the week. Also having them get rid of the CDV while they're in there. I'm hoping it feels like a whole new system when I get it back! Matticus91 Fantastic news! I was beyond happy to hear they had approved everything.
