I wasn't sure what to make of the first episode of Shameless. I wasn't sold on the characters and the direction seemed directionless. In fact, it wasn't until the third ep that my eyes were opened. It's as if the actors have found their mark and the characters have come to life. While the ensemble cast is solid, and Macy is at his irascible best, it is the performance of three of the actors which makes Shameless something special.
Emmy Rossum, as the 'adult' glue that holds the family together, has rightly received the most press. Her role requires a combination of strength, resolve, humour and vulnerability - qualities that would thwart a lesser actress.
Rossum is able to convincingly bring it all together with fire and sexuality in addition to her other qualities. Equally effective in his role as the younger brother Lip, Jeremy Allen White brings a world-weary innocence to his character.
Together, they're a maladjusted family unit, tightly knit out of necessity and working overtime to preserve their own best interests. SMILF is all about the daily twists and turns of Bridgette's life as a young single mom working to secure a better life for her son. Like Fiona, that typically results in Bridgette becoming involved in ridiculous schemes, failing constantly, and, more often than not, finding herself torn between her own needs and the needs of her kid. Their lives continue. And that makes me feel good as a viewer and a reader. I think I have an idea about what would happen over the next few months, but I have no idea what would wholly happen.
In my mind, Lip gets a motorcycle shop and settles in and loses the neighborhood and becomes the new patriarch for that crazy family. But you can fill in the blanks however you want to fill in the blanks as a viewer. Whatever you think is right! I would have been interested in seeing the plight of this family without Frank and all that he brings hovering over their heads. Everything is getting a revival these days. There is nothing planned. But never say never.
But we get to tell a lot of great stories with these people and wonderful actors, writers and directors. You never know. Seeing Kevin and Vee in Louisville was a great window into a whole other world, too. I was also interested in Arthur guest star Josh Malina and Carl running the Alibi, it could have been funny as a cop bar story. Yes, absolutely. Beyond everything else in the show that people love, what I was always most attracted to was no matter how difficult things were, this was a group of people who loved each other and came together even when they were angry with each other.
